그녀는 국제성이 풍부하며, 여러 나라에 살거나 유학을 다녀오거나 여행을 했습니다. 이런 경험 속에서 빈곤 문제에 관심을 갖게 된 계기란 무엇일까요? 먼 곳에서 알파지리에 와 주신 이유란 무엇일까요?

도상국의 잠재력에 주목해 문제 해결을!

처음 뵙겠습니다. 현재 알파지리에서 인턴을 하고 있는 오쓰카 마유나라고 합니다.
사람이 많고, 신경을 곤두세운 채 쭈볏쭈볏 거리를 걷고 있던 나이로비에서 9시간 정도 버스를 타면, 미고리라고 하는 치안이 좋은 작은 마을에 도착해서 오랜만에 일본어로 반겨주셔서 안심했던 기억이 납니다.
　
이번 글에서는 제가 빈곤 문제에 대해서 깊이 생각하게 된 계기를 말씀 드리겠습니다.

저는 2017년 9월까지, 복지 국가이며 난민수용대국이기도 한 스웨덴에서 교환 유학을 하고 있었습니다.

그 때 생긴 친구 중에는 아프리카에서 배로 온 사람, 중동에서 걸어서 온 사람 등이 있어서, 자신이 선택할 여지도 없이 살아가기 위해서 스웨덴에 온 분들이 있었습니다. 미디어를 통해 정보는 얻고 있었고, 머리로는 이해를 하고 있다고 생각했었습니다. 그러나 제가 겪어본 적이 없는, 상상을 초월한 문제에 직면한 그 분들의 이야기를 들었을 때는 머리를 망치로 얻어맞은 듯한 충격을 받았습니다.

다양한 문제가 얽힌 결과이긴 하지만 빈곤으로 인해 삶에 대한 선택의 폭이 좁아지는 사람들에 대해서 더 알고 싶다고 생각했습니다. 빈곤 지원이라고 하더라도 여러가지 규모의 활동이 있겠지만, 도상국이 선진국을 따라잡을 수 있도록 하는 것을 목표로 하는 도상국 지원은 별로 좋아하지 않습니다.

그것보다 더 도상국이나 각 지역의 잠재력에 주목해서 지역과 밀접한 문제를 해결 하는 것에 흥미를 가지게 되어, 미고리라는 작은 농촌에서 가난과 무지에 지지 않는 농촌 조직을 만들려고 하는 알파지리의 활동에 참여하고 싶다고 생각했습니다.

태양이 가깝고 건조한 이 땅에서 일주일에 몇번은 손으로 빨래를 하고, 졸졸 나오는 미지근한 물로 몸을 씻고, 가끔 일어나는 정전이나 단수에 분투하고 있다보면 사회 환경이 갖추어진 선진국이라는 틀에서 뛰쳐나와 개발도상국의 농촌이라는, 여태까지 살아본 적 없는 환경에 왔구나, 라고 느낍니다.

농촌 지역 특유의 천천히 흘러가는 시간과 달리, 매일 다양한 업무에 도전하다보면 매일이 순식간에 지나가고 있습니다.

Hello. I am Mayuna Otsuka, an university student from Japan and now working as an intern at Alphajiri.

When I arrived at Nairobi, I remember I was walking through the town a bit nervously because of the crowd of people and the hectic atmosphere. After 9 hours of bus ride from Nairobi, I arrived at this small town called Migori, where I can walk outside without being too nervous even if I'm a young girl and a"mzungu"(="foreigner"in Swahili).

This time I will post about why I got interested in solving poverty issues.

Until last September, I was doing an exchange in Sweden, which is a country famous for the social welfare system and as a country that are receiving a lot of refugees. During my stay I made some friends who came all the way from African continent by boat, and there were even people who came from middle east Asia by foot. They had no choice but to come to Sweden to survive. I was shocked. I didn't know what to say when I heard about their stories. This is when I realized I knew nothing about the world even though I watch the news and read the newspapers.

Of course poverty is not the only reason of this matter, but I felt that I need to know more about people who doesn't have an opportunity to make choices in their lives because of poverty. When it comes to these poverty issues there are some people/companies/organizations that say developing countries should learn how the developed countries function and copy them. Is this really true?I believe no. I think it is more important to focus on the possibilities and the potential the developed countries or the local area has, and try to solve problems at a local level. This is why I decided to be an intern at Alphajiri, where they are trying to make farmer's life better by considering the local issues.

Every time I feel the sun being so close to the ground, when I wash my clothes by hand few times per week, or when I take the shower with warm water that comes out little by little, sometimes battling with the no electricity no water life, I realize that I got out from the world where everything is organized, and that I'm in a small town in Kenya. It is a bit weird that the time seems to pass by very slowly in this countryside. But at the same time it passes so fast when I work at Alphajiri.
